My favorite room to have ever designed, Theo’s nursery is the perfect balance of whimsy and fun while still feeling calm and safe. I’m so proud of this space and love all the little details that brought it all together. It was truly a labor of love for our first sweet babe.

The biggest project we tackled in this nursery was the DIY renter friendly checkerboard wall. The inspiration came from Boho Frisco‘s orange checkerboard wall in her SF kitchen. When I found out it was completely removable and renter friendly, I was determined to DIY it in my own space. The vinyl comes in a big roll, so I cut it down to 12×12 squares. From that point it was just a matter of peeling the backing and placing them on the wall (easier said than done). There was just one problem… because I didn’t cut perfect squares, they didn’t line up or connect corners as perfectly as I wanted. Because I am a perfectionist this was INCREDIBLY frustrating and I gave up after a handful of squares were placed. The wall sat unfinished for MONTHS before my husband finally finished it for me (bless his heart). I’m so glad that he got it done because it was absolutely my favorite part of the room!

Details:

  • The wall is not paint, it’s adhesive vinyl!
  • Our crib was a hand me down from my cousin
  • Crib mattress is Newton baby
  • Dresser is IKEA Hemnes (its the perfect height for changing and lots of roomy drawers) we got ours secondhand, which was a great choice because putting together an IKEA piece at 30 something weeks pregnant was definitely my worst nightmare
  • The rainbow rug was a random find from Aldi
  • Curtains are a partial DIY- I purchased these velvet curtains and sewed tabs and bows for the top to hang, inspired by these curtains from Target
  • The green storage cart was a secondhand FB marketplace find but Michael’s carries the exact one in lots of color options!
  • Book ledges were also a FB marketplace find and are retired IKEA. Here is a similar option with cute scalloped detail
  • Our reclining rocker was a hand me down from my brother
  • All the art was thrifted- the matching prints above the dresser are still one of my best finds to date. Glare free frames and gorgeous solid wood frames always feel like a goldmine at the thrift
  • Books are a collection of thrifted finds, hand me downs and gifts from our baby shower. You can find so many great books at Goodwill and stores like Once Upon a Child. I also love Thrift Books for an online option, especially if I’m searching for something specific.

I also just wanted to add- this nursery was competed in October of 2023. We moved from this apartment a few months later. We now live in a one bedroom with our TWO boys, but this remains one of my favorite spaces and I’m so happy to have taken so many pictures of it and now have it documented permanently here! Its never too late to do a project or share the things you love with others. xoxo
